Watercolors

Just a few paintings I did the other day. I kind of set aside the watercolors for awhile and really tried to painting with oils for the first time in my life and it has been a rough few years. I still want to try to work landscape stuff in oil, but it is so hard for me to grasp. I spent many years learning watercolor and painting transparent so the change has not been kind. And when I struggle I find it comforting to go back to where I began in my safe zone, for me the watercolors are that special zone.

Watercolor Sketches

The first image of the woman holding the basket was copied from the cover of my new book, Sargent and the Sea. And the landscape was from a photo of a local lake I paddle.

Figure Painting

Keep things simple in figure class this week. I tried a black and white and then really changed it up and did one with back and white plus brown. Also included a sketch from the session.

Anticipating

24x36 inch oil on panel
Well some of this painting is dry and some parts are wet, so the color is a bit off. Maybe I will photo it again when dry or after the varnish if I go that direction.

Figure Study

18x24 oil on canvas
I took a high key approach to this painting and it ended up a bit in the middle of the road as far as values go. Wanted to paint a picture that did not have real dark range of value, I often work really dark. Plus I kept my pallet real basic using earth red, yellow, black and white.
